As we wait out these last couple months of cold weather, it is still important to have a furnace that will keep your home warm when the temperature drops. Sometimes, when there is a problem, you may find that your furnace is blowing cold air when you’re looking for that warmth. There are several reasons that this could be happening. Hal Mechanical is here to talk you through some of the possible issues that you could be facing.
Reasons Your Furnace Could Be Blowing Cold Air
Some of the issues that cause your furnace to blow cold air out of the vents in your home are issues that can be solved without calling on the pros for help. Following are some of the potential problems you may be dealing with.
– Thermostat Issues: The first thing that you should always check is the thermostat. You need to make sure that the heat is actually turned on. Another potential problem is the fan being turned on. If this is the case, it will continuously blow air out of your vents whether it is being heated or not.
– Dirty Air Filter: The filter in your furnace plays an integral part in it working properly. When the filter is dirty, your furnace isn’t getting the airflow that is needed. You should be changing your filter every month or so when the furnace is in use to avoid this problem.
– Clogged Condensate Line: Your high efficiency furnace will produce a byproduct that is condensed liquid that needs to be drained. When there is a clog in the condensate drain line, you will not only get cold air out your vents, but you will also notice water pooling around the appliance.
– Insufficient Gas Supply: When your furnace relies on natural gas to power it, an insufficient supply will lead to problems. You can check to make sure the gas line hasn’t been shut off for any reason. If there is no problem there, you could have a blocked line that’s causing the problem.
– Pilot Light Issues: If the pilot light isn’t lit, you will see cold air as well. Pilot light problems could be due to a malfunctioning thermocouple or a buildup of soot and dirt that is causing lighting issues. Sometimes, it is just a matter of getting that pilot light lit again to get your furnace to produce the warm air you need.
