Winter is coming to an end and homeowners will want to prepare for the summer heat. Often air conditioners, during the previous season, would have developed some problems and be in need of repair. Many homeowners would push off repairs, but with the summer season soon approaching, now is the time to get those repairs done. Hal Mechanical would like to take the time to share some common air conditioner repairs and help you determine if you need your air conditioner repaired before the summer season.
How Do I Troubleshoot My AC Problems?
Refrigerant Leaks – If you notice last season that your cooling bill was getting higher or your air conditioner had a harder time keeping the home cool, you may have a refrigerant leak. The refrigerant is an essential element to the air conditioner. If the refrigerant system developed a leak you may have lost all of your air conditioner refrigerant which means no cool air this summer.
Drainage Leaks – If you notice your air conditioner leaks more water than normal or developed a leak near the air conditioner unit, you have a problem with the drainage system. A number of problems may have occurred. The condensate pan may have rusted through and developed holes. The drain and the piping system may be clogged. If you had a lot of water or water puddling around the unit, you need your drainage system checked.
Bad Capacitors – If you air conditioner’s compressor and or fan had problems, the capacitors may need to be replaced. The capacitors provide a steady supply of power to the compressor and the fan. If they both kept shutting down or not turning on at all, you will need to have the capacitors replaced or the compressor inspected for malfunctions.
Bad Compressor – The compressor is designed to supply power to the refrigerant and help circulate the refrigerant through the coils. If the compressor is not working, again this may be the capacitors. However, if the compressor was running hot for too long, it will seize up, and or burn out. If the capacitors are not the reason for the compressor failure you may need to replace the entire component.
Dirty Evaporator Coils – The evaporator can become damaged. However, that is rare as they are housed in a steel casing. But the evaporator coil can become dirty and left alone, corrosion can occur. Evaporator coils should be cleaned once a year to prevent corrosion and improve efficiency. If the coils are corroded you may need them replaced. Often if there is a problem with the evaporator coil your air conditioner unit will ice up.
Bad Contactor – There are many contactors throughout the air conditioner unit. There are contactors for the compressor, blower motor, and condenser fan. A contactor is the component that makes the electrical connection that supplies power to the various components in the air conditioner. Contactors can develop arcing or pitting which will cause the contactor to lose the connection. This makes it difficult for electricity to flow through properly. If you had a time where a component lost power it may be due to worn contactors. You will want to have them replaced.
