No one wants to have furnace problems when we are in the middle of the winter months. However, that’s when it tends to happen. There are several things that can go wrong with your furnace, and not all of them require an HVAC professional to fix them. There are several things that you can try before turning to the pros. Hal Mechanical is here to talk about some furnace troubleshooting tips for the most common furnace problems.
Cold Spots in Your House
If you find that there are a couple rooms in your home that seem to be colder than everywhere else, you want to get to the bottom of the problem as soon as you can. One of the first places that you should look are the vents and registers. Make sure they are all uncovered and open. Sometimes, there are objects or furniture that gets places over the registers which can prohibit the warm air from getting into the room.
Heater is Short Cycling
If you have noticed that your furnace is turning on only to shut off not long after, it is known as short cycling. This can be incredibly hard on your furnace and can cause more wear and tear than is normal. The first thing you need to check when you encounter this problem is your air filter. If the air filter is completely saturated, it can cause short cycling issues. Try changing out the old filter for a new one to fix this problem.
Heat Not Turning On
When the heat isn’t coming on at all, it is cause for concern. As silly as it sounds, the first place to look is your thermostat. Sometimes, the heat can get shut off without your realizing it. Make sure the heat is turned on there to see if that can solve the problem. It is also possible that your thermostat needs to have the batteries replaced and isn’t working right. Make sure your thermostat isn’t dirty as well. Sometimes, all it needs is a deep cleaning to get working right again.
Electrical Panel Should be Checked
If you don’t have any heat coming on in your home, the next place you should check after the thermostat is your electrical panel. Along with the electrical panel, there is a furnace switch that is located near your furnace. Make sure that didn’t get bumped and shut off as well. When you are looking at your electrical panel, there should be a breaker that is labeled for the furnace. Make sure the breaker isn’t tripped and is in the on position.
