After the mild winter we experienced here in Vegas, we should all start thinking about our AC systems and work to get them ready for the summer months that will be here before we know it. It is important that you care for and protect your AC system to get the most out of it. If you are dealing with a unit that is on the back half of its lifespan, you need to be vigilant in maintaining it to extend its life. Hal Mechanical is here to share some tips that will hopefully help you get as much time as you can out of your AC system.
Inspect Outdoor Condenser AC Unit
Many people don’t give the outdoor unit much thought until they are facing needed repairs. It is important that you are paying attention to the outdoor unit just as much as what’s going on with the indoor portion of your cooling system. The outdoor unit should first and foremost, be placed on a level slab. If the slab isn’t level, you may be able to fix that using gravel, sand or even a piece of wood. Without the slab being level, you will see a decrease in performance and it’s hard on the unit. You also need to make sure there is no trash or other debris around your outdoor unit. Trim away any landscaping, remove any trash or even leaf litter that could restrict airflow.
Clean Air Filters, Vents & Ducts
The air filters in your AC system need to get the attention they deserve. They should be changed or cleaned on a regular basis to ensure your system is getting the airflow that is needed. Many filters need to be changed on a monthly basis. While you are in the process of changing out your air filters, it’s a good time to use a vacuum to clean your vents and returns as well. Dirt and debris often start to gather and can keep your system from working as efficiently as it should.
Routine AC Maintenance is Important
There is nothing that can replace routine maintenance performed by an HVAC professional. A thorough inspection of every working part will do wonders in extending the life of your AC system. During a routine maintenance appointment, you can expect the following tasks to be completed:
– Lubricating all working parts
– Thorough cleaning of coils and fins inside and out
– Condensate drain inspection
– Refrigerant line inspection
– Motor and fan blade inspection
– Checking fluid levels
– Thermostat calibration
