During the middle of the summer, your air conditioning system is working the hardest. It is during this time the air conditioner is more prone to develop a problem. The air conditioner’s components are under a lot of stress in keeping up the demand of the home’s cooler temperatures. Additionally, working in the extreme heat also plays a role in wearing down your air conditioner’s components. Hal Mechanical would like to share some of the more common air conditioner problems that you should watch out for this summer season.
Leaking AC Refrigerant
The refrigerant is the key element that creates the cool air for your home. Often it is during the middle of the summer season when your air conditioner will develop a refrigerant leak. When there isn’t enough refrigerant to create the needed cool air, your home will become warmer and warmer. Often the inside of the home may feel more humid as well. If your air condition is blowing warm and humid air, you most likely have a refrigerant leak. Other signs of a refrigerant leak can include a hissing sound or ice developing around the evaporator coils.
Bad AC Compressor
The compressor helps the refrigerant create cool air. When the compressor develops a problem, the air conditioner will fail to create cool air. When a compressor fails or wears down, you may feel warm air coming from your air vents. Ice can develop around the copper pipe leading to the compressor, or the compressor may develop loud noises. If the compressor develops a problem, avoid running the air conditioner until it has been inspected as it can cause additional problems.
Air Conditioner Making Weird Noises
If you air conditioner develops odd noises during the summer season, a number of issues may have occurred. Noises can be due to the fan motor burning up or failed, the ducts developing a leak, or the condenser has failed. A good HVAC technician can hear the noise and determine what is the problem. Each problem will have its own distinct sound. Until the HVAC technician comes to your home, it would be wise to keep the air conditioner turned off to prevent further problems.
Dirty AC Coils
As your air conditioner runs during the warmer months, the coils can become more and more dirty. There are two type of coils used in an air conditioning system. There is the condenser coils and the evaporator coils. Both can be cleaned to restore your cooling system. When the coils become dirty, you may notice reduced air flow from your air vents, ice developing around the air conditioner, and less production of cool air. The coils should be cleaned out once a year and is part of the typical air conditioner tune-up. If you have neglected your air conditioner’s tune-up, you may have this mid-season problem.
