Something most, if not all, homeowners want is their furnace to last as long as possible. Typically, furnaces can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, and that depends on the quality of the furnace and how well it is cared for throughout the years. At the very least, many people want to get through the cold season without their furnace breaking down. To help you get the most time out of your furnace, we at Hal Mechanical would like to share a few tips that can extend the life of your furnace.
Clean or Change Air Filters
The life out of your furnace can be drained if you neglect the air filter and you don’t have them replaced or cleaned. Air filters are designed to collect the filth and keep it contained in order to prevent the dirt and debris from getting to the furnace’s mechanics. When dirt begins to cover the filter, your furnace must work much harder to move air. Because of the blanket of dirt and dust covering the filter, the furnace fan will need to work hard to overcome the additional resistance. Since less air is moving through the system as well, your furnace will need to run longer in order to raise the temperature.
Air Leak Repair & Prevention
Leaks lose the warm air your furnace works so hard to produce. Also, your furnace is working harder and longer to keep up with the demand in addition to losing the warm air you paired for resulting in it loosing years from the lifespan. Small gaps and spaces, especially the gaps and spaces around the front door, walls, bathroom, windows, and kitchen vents as well as along the basement intrusions will let warm air leak out. One of the best things you can do to not only improve the life of your furnace along with the comfort of your home is ensuring your home is properly sealed and insulated. To seal the gaps, use weather stripping and caulking accordingly.
Upgrade Thermostat
The furnace will breakdown permanently sooner rather than when they are overworked. The best way to implement proper balance to your furnace is a programmable furnace without worrying about human error. When you install a programmable thermostat, the usage of your heating system is better controlled. Turning the heat down at night and during the day when no one is around based on time of day and season, you can set a predefined schedule that adjusts the temperature of your home. To help you extend the life of your furnace, smart thermostats offer even less limitations.
Schedule Maintenance Services on a Routine Basis
To avoid the nightmare of getting your furnace repaired, we recommend having your furnace maintained at regular intervals. Schedule your furnace tune-up at the end of summer or early fall, though it is better to do it late than not at all.
