There are a number of different problems that you could encounter with your AC unit, but today we would like to talk about one of the most common problems that we see, short cycling. Hal Mechanical is here to talk about what causes short cycling and why it is so damaging to your system.
What is HVAC Short Cycling?
If it seems like your air conditioning system is turning on to only shortly shut right off again, you may be dealing with a short cycling issue. This is an issue that is extremely common but can also be extremely damaging. It happens when your thermostat signals that the temperature is warm enough to warrant the AC to kick on, but the AC can’t complete the cooling cycle. The unit is constantly stuck in a startup cycle with the compressor constantly turning off and then on again.
How Does Short Cycling Damage a Compressor?
It may not sound like this issue is a big deal, but to your AC unit, it is. The compressor can’t continuously start and shut down again. It is hard on your compressor and will lower its lifespan. When your compressor goes out, it can be an extremely expensive problem to fix. Not only will it end up putting way more wear and tear on your compressor, but it will also cost you more in energy consumption. It takes a great deal of power to start up your compressor over and over again.
What Causes Short Cycling?
There are a few different problems that can cause your unit to short cycle. The biggest and most common problem that causes short cycling is an oversized unit. When the unit is too large for the space, it will run into this problem, and the only way to fix the problem is to replace the AC unit all together. The other common problem that leads to short cycling is low refrigerant levels. Since the refrigerant is located within a close system, this means you have a leak somewhere. Fixing the leak may be a viable option for you, but if your unit is older than 10 years, I may not be worth it as your unit is on the back end of its life.
