When you live in an older house, your furnace is likely older as well. You can plan on your furnace lasting between 15-20 years before you need to replace it. While your older furnace may still be running, it may not be running efficiently. It is important that you have an efficient furnace so that you aren’t overpaying to have a warm house every day this cold winter season. However, it can be difficult to determine whether or not your furnace is working efficiently. Hal Mechanical is here to talk about you can tell if your furnace is an efficient one, or if you would be better of replacing it for a newer model.
How to Tell if Your Furnace is Efficient
It may seem difficult to figure out if your furnace is an efficient one or not, but you may find that it is easier than you think. The first thing you will need to do is determine how many BTUs it takes to keep your home heated. This is calculated by the room dimensions, the ceiling height and the temperature that you are most comfortable at. You can usually find a calculator online that will make the process pretty easy. Once you have figured this out, you will need to take a look at your furnace to see what the BTU output it is capable of. If your furnace has an 80 percent efficiency and you need to have 100,000 BTUs to keep your home comfortable, you will need to have a furnace that is capable of an output of 125,000 BTUs at 100 percent to keep your home warm.
Should I Replace My Furnace Before It Dies?
It can be a difficult decision to make when it comes to replacing your furnace for a more efficient one. The cost can be high to replace your furnace, but you may find that you recoup those costs when you get a more energy efficient furnace to take its place. You may be surprised at how much you can save each month on your energy bill. Here are some indications that you may need to replace your furnace.
– Your furnace needs to be repaired often
– If your furnace is getting close to 15 years old
– Your furnace is making strange noises
