Should Blower Run Constantly in Henderson, NV? Thermostat Set to On, Limit Switch Needs a Reset & More

When a furnace sounds like it is running, in many cases it is the sound of the blower that is running. A blower running constantly is not normal and will cause your heating bill to go through the roof. It will wear down the blower causing premature repairs or needed replacements. Hal Mechanical will help run you through the reasons why a blower will run constantly and how to troubleshoot the problem.

Thermostat Set to On Instead of Auto

One of the most common reasons, and luckily one of the easiest fixes for this problem, is that the thermostat has been set to the “on” setting. When the thermostat is set to the “on” setting the fan or the blower will run non-stop. To make sure that this isn’t the reason why the blower is running, check the thermostat and make sure that it is set to the “auto” setting and not the “on” setting. Restoring the thermostat to “auto” will stop the blower from running non-stop.

Can You Reset a Limit Switch?

Another cause for a blower to run constantly is a problem with the fan’s limit switch. The limit switch control is located underneath the hood of the furnace. The limit switch turns off and on the blower. The limit switch also monitors the temperature of the burners. Once the burners cool down the limit switch will turn off the blower. When there is a problem with the limit switch it can, at times, break down in the middle of a cycle. If the blower was running when the limit switch breaks, the blower will remain on. In some cases the limit switch can be set to manual override which can cause the limit switch to leave the blower on. However, it will need to be set manually. Another problem is when the limit switch is faulty and it then needs to be rewired or replaced. To make sure that a limit switch wasn’t accidentally left to the manual option, the hood of the furnace will need to be removed. You will then need to locate the limit switch and make sure the limit switch isn’t on the manual override or it will always run. If you find the manual override is on, restore the limit switch to the proper setting. If this doesn’t correct the problem with the blower then have the limit switch inspected by a HVAC technician. They may either rewire the limit switch or they may find it needs to be replaced.

When a blower is running constantly it is important to determine the cause to stop the blower from running non-stop. When a blower continuously runs it will break down the blower and its motor. If the fan runs for too long the motor will wear down and often it to will need to be repaired or replaced. To prevent additional damages to the furnace have the furnace properly inspected.
