It’s always a challenge to stay cool when you live in a home with multiple levels. When you have a basement, it is relatively easy to keep it cool. However, when you have an upper level, it can be a real challenge to keep those rooms as cool as the main level. There are some things you can do to try and keep things cooled evenly though. Hal Mechanical is here to share our best tips to help you keep your upper level cool this summer.
How to Keep Upstairs Cool in Summer?
If you’re struggling to stay comfortable when you walk upstairs in your home, the summer can seem long. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to make yourself more comfortable.
– Adjust Registers: The registers that are found on your main level can be adjusted to help push the cooled air upstairs. You shouldn’t shut them completely, but you can shut them partially to help out with the airflow.
– Attic Insulation: The attic in your home plays a big role in how comfortable your upper level is going to feel. Make sure you have ample insulation in your attic to be as comfortable as possible during the summer.
– Ceiling Fans: One of the most effective ways to help cool down a room is to get the air moving. It can feel significantly better when you have a ceiling fan moving the air around the room. If you don’t have ceiling fans, you can even put a different type of fan in the room to help things out.
– Window Coverings: The window coverings in your rooms can help to keep sunlight out of the room. It can be alarming how much the sun can heat up your home. When you keep the blinds or the curtains closed, you won’t experience as much heat in those spaces. If you don’t have window coverings, we recommend having some installed to help keep things cooler.
Do I Need a Second HVAC System to Keep Upper Level?
One of the best ways to ensure both of the levels in your home are equally comfortable is to have a second HVAC system installed upstairs. This can allow the upstairs to have a separate thermostat that will control the temperature upstairs to help keep it more comfortable. That way, the air won’t shut off when the right temperature has been reached downstairs, only to find that the upstairs is still 5-10 degrees hotter than it should be.
