It’s that time again, time to get your AC ready to turn back on as our weather heats up. We are starting to see an increase in temperatures on a regular basis; which means summer isn’t far away. Before you flip that switch from heat to AC, you want to make sure your AC is ready for it. This can be done easily with a routine maintenance appointment. There are a number of spring time AC problems that we commonly see this time of year. Hal Mechanical is here to talk about some of the most common spring AC problems that homeowners face.
Dirty Air Filter
As a homeowner, you should be used to changing the air filter in your AC system on a regular basis. However, it is easy to forget to replace this integral piece of your system when you haven’t been thinking about cooling your home in months. It is essential that you have a clean air filter in your unit so that the system gets the airflow needed to operate properly. A dirty air filter can cause big problems for your cooling system.
Tripped AC Breaker
Your AC unit is hooked up to its own breaker to offer your home as well as the unit protection against dangerous power surges. If you go to turn on your cooling system this spring and find that it isn’t turning on at all, one of the first things that you should check is the breaker. If that breaker has been tripped, your unit will not be getting power at all. If you have a breaker that is tripping regularly, this is an indication that there is a larger problem that needs to be addressed within the system.
AC Refrigerant Leaks
Another issue that is common has to do with the refrigerant in your AC unit. Your AC unit is a closed system so you should not have to put any refrigerant in it unless there is a leak somewhere. This is a common misconception among homeowners. Many homeowners think that they need to have the refrigerant in their system recharged on a regular basis, but if there is no leak there is no reason to charge. It is not uncommon for an older unit to develop a refrigerant leak over time. Often, these leaks can be fixed and the homeowner can enjoy a cool home again.
Dirty AC Coils
The coils found on your outside portion of your AC unit often get dusty and dirty over the winter months. Part of maintaining your AC system is to have these coils cleaned. If they are dirty, your unit will not be able to work and function properly.
