AC Losing Refrigerant
When you have a refrigerant leak, this can cause issues more than just ice build-up. If you do have a refrigerant leak then your AC won’t be able to get enough refrigerant to the temperature above freezing. When it won’t go below freezing that is when you start getting ice. Refrigerant is actually a liquid chemical that turns to gas. When the refrigerant goes through your evaporator coil it will grab the heat from the air which helps cool down the air that is being blown out.
Dirty AC Coils
If you have dirty evaporator coils then it makes it harder for the heat to absorb because it is too dirty. When this happens, your refrigerant will get too cold and start to freeze. Your evaporator coils can get dirty over time from dust or mildew. These are things that can happen without a proper maintenance tune-up. An early tune-up can help ensure this won’t happen.
Clogged Air Filters
If you have dirty air filters you need to change them out. Your air filter should be changed every 3 to 4 months to ensure the best care for your AC. If your air filters are too dirty and clogged with dust and dirt then it doesn’t allow good air to flow into the air ducts. Like we have said before, if a good amount of air can’t get to the evaporator coils and then the refrigerant can’t get enough heat, it will start to freeze up. If you are taking care of your air conditioning with proper maintenance you can eliminate many of these problems from freezing up your AC.
AC Blower Fan Not Working
If your blower fan is not working then this can also lead to ice build-up. You can also have problems with the fan when you have dirty air filters and the fan cannot blow enough warm air to get to the evaporator coils.

When you take proper care of your AC, make sure you get yearly, if not twice-a-year tune-ups. This can help solve the problem of ice buildup.
