What are the Most Common AC Problems in Eldorado, NV? Air Conditioner Run All Day, Leaking AC & More

During the middle of the summer in Southern Nevada, the worst thing that could happen is for the air conditioner to break down. A central air conditioner can develop a number of problems that can result in cooling failure. For those who have a central air conditioning system and find their cooling system isn’t working properly or has broken down, Hal Mechanical will share some of the common problems that occur in a central air conditioning system.

Is it Normal for Air Conditioner to Run All Day?

When you have an air conditioner that runs constantly, this is a common situation of an improper thermostat setting. Often when the air conditioner runs constantly check the thermostat. See if the thermostat is set to the “On” position. If the thermostat is set to the on position, this means the fan will constantly be running. Put the thermostat back to the “auto” setting to restore the proper cycle of the central air conditioner unit. If the thermostat isn’t set to the on position, then there may be an electrical problem and most likely a capacitor needs to be replaced.

How Do I Know if My AC is Leaking Refrigerant?

Another common central air conditioner problem is refrigerant leaks. Refrigerant leaks can occur in different areas of the air conditioner. When the refrigerant leaks out the central air conditioner, it will not be able to create cool air for the home. Refrigerant leaks can reveal themselves in different ways. The home will of course be warmer. You may also feel warm air blowing through the vents, or the air conditioner will ice up. Leaking refrigerant will need to be refilled and recharged by an HVAC technician.

Leaking Central Air Conditioner?

Water leaks are another common problem that occurs with a central air conditioning system. Water leaks occur for a few different reasons. One may be due to the condensate drainage pan. The drainage pan may be blocked or the pan has rust that has eaten a hole in the pan which allows the water to leak out. Another reason behind water leaks from the air conditioner may also be due to a break or clog within the drainage pipeline. The condensate drainage system will need to be thoroughly inspected and the problem corrected.

Central Air Conditioner Making Loud Noise

When the air conditioning unit begins to make a loud noise, this is a major problem. A grinding, screeching noise is sign the air conditioner’s moving parts are grinding into each other or the parts are binding up. When noises occur you will want to first turn off the central air conditioner. The noise will need to be investigated. Have an HVAC technician come and inspect the cooling system. Be prepared as noise often indicates that a major component needs replacement.
