Getting Your Furnace Ready for Winter in Spanish Trail, NV; Need to Clean Vents, Check Up Maintenance & More

While many areas in the country have long since turned on their furnaces this fall, those of us in Vegas love that we have been enjoying wonderful weather for the past several months. However, it is usually around Halloween that we start to see a turn in the weather. As we transition from hot weather to colder temperatures, it won’t be long, and we will all be turning on our furnace for the first time this winter. Hal Mechanical is here to talk about what needs to be done to prep your furnace and home for the winter.

Change Your Air Filter

This is one of the most important things that you can do for your HVAC system. Many homeowners don’t think about their filter and end up damaging the heating and cooling systems in their home because they aren’t getting the air circulation that they need. You should be changing your filter on a regular basis, but if you can’t remember the last time it got changed, you absolutely need to do it before turning your furnace on for the first time this winter.

Check Alarms & Detectors

Your home should be armed with not only smoke detectors, but carbon monoxide detectors as well. These detectors can give you the peace of mind that you need to get a good night’s sleep. Make sure they aren’t positioned too close to your HVAC units or you may get false alarms.

Clean Out Vents & Ducts

While some people believe that a full air duct cleaning is necessary before you turn on your furnace for the winter, this isn’t true. You can simply take off the registers and vacuum out the ducts as far as possible. Chances are, there isn’t much beyond what you can see anyway. You should use an attachment on your vacuum to remove the dust bunnies that collect on the vents so that you get the warm airflow that you are looking for during the winter. This will also help decrease the allergens that are blown into your indoor air as well.

Get a Furnace Tune-Up

Before you turn on your furnace for the first time, you should most definitely get your annual maintenance appointment scheduled. During a furnace maintenance appointment, your furnace will be thoroughly inspected for any signs of damage or need for repair. When repairs are caught early, generally speaking, they don’t cost near as much to have fixed. This can help save the homeowner hundreds of dollars. Not only will an inspection happen, but your unit will also be cleaned so that it can function as efficiently as possible.
