It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, most of us want to feel comfortable any time we are in our home. During the winter months, our attention is focused on the heating system in our house. Even though we don’t have to worry about that for too many months in the Las Vegas area, we are definitely still in the thick of winter and most people are using their furnaces to stay comfortable. No one wants to pay more for heat than they have to though. Hal Mechanical is here to talk about some of the most common heating mistakes that people make during the winter.
Should I Turn Down Heat when Not Home
If you are working for a decent amount of the day or have left town for a little weekend getaway, there is no need to keep your thermostat turned up as high as you would when you are home. That way, you are just paying to heat a house that doesn’t have anyone in it. If you have a thermostat you can control from your phone, you can turn up the heat just before you get home and won’t have to go one minute without feeling comfortable. Don’t pay to heat your home when no one is there to enjoy it.
Is it Smart to Crank Up the Heat?
When you arrive home from a long vacation, it can be tempting to crank that heat up to try and get comfortable as soon as possible. While this sounds like it should work, it actually won’t do anything to heat your home faster just by turning up the thermostat. The only thing you will find is that your heating system will run longer than it needs to and you will have a higher energy bill when it is all said and done.
Lock Windows to Heat In
This may seem like a small thing but locking your windows can have a big impact on your heating bill. When you don’t lock your window, the window isn’t closed all the way. When you engage that locking mechanism, it forces the window to make contact with the seal which will keep the air that you paid to have heated, stay in your home.
Leaving the Exhaust Fan on in the Bathroom Allows Hot Air to Escape
For those with an exhaust fan in the bathroom or the kitchen, they can be helpful in clearing out any unwanted smells. However, they can also work to remove warm air from your home. You shouldn’t leave them running longer than you have to, to avoid cycling more warm air than you have to, outside.
